This is Dorothy, my wooden toy for a class project mentored by artists Amanda Visell and Michelle Valigura. We were given a balsa block, a wooden dowel, and a small wooden cabinet knob to use as materials for a wooden toy. The only constraints were that we use all three pieces in some way and that we not be scared of using powertools.
I had assistance with cutting the knob and the dowel, but I carved and sanded the main block. Dorothy was painted with acrylics over the course of a few sittings until a sufficient coat had built up for more paint to adhere to. I had trouble with the first few coats as the wood was holding onto the moisture and drying very slowly.
